{"id":48207,"date":"2026-02-02T20:31:49","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T20:31:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maritimehub.co.uk\/?p=48207"},"modified":"2026-02-02T20:31:49","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T20:31:49","slug":"arc-flash-boundaries-ppe-live-work-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maritimehub.co.uk\/arc-flash-boundaries-ppe-live-work-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"Arc-Flash Boundaries, PPE &amp; Live-Work Reality"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Why \u201cit\u2019s only 440 V\u201d keeps injuring ETOs<br><br>Introduction \u2014 voltage doesn\u2019t cause arc flash, energy does<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arc-flash injuries are not caused by high voltage.<br>They are caused by <strong>high fault current and slow clearing times<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ships combine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>compact switchboards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>very low system impedance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>multiple generators in parallel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes even <strong>LV systems extremely dangerous<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What arc-flash actually is<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An arc fault:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>vaporises copper conductors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>produces plasma hotter than the sun\u2019s surface<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>creates a pressure wave<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ejects molten metal and shrapnel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In a ship\u2019s switchboard room, there is nowhere for that energy to go \u2014 except into people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd27 Regulatory anchors (clear and enforceable)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">IEC 60092-401<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Requires:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>precautions against electrical arc hazards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>protection against fire and explosion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>safe access and maintenance arrangements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SOLAS Chapter II-1, Regulation 45<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cElectrical installations shall be arranged so as to minimize the risk of fire and electric shock.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Arc-flash is explicitly considered a fire and explosion hazard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Class Rules (DNV \/ LR \/ ABS)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Expect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>arc-flash risk assessment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>appropriate PPE<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>warning labels on switchboards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>live-work justification<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLive work because it\u2019s inconvenient to shut down\u201d is <strong>not acceptable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Arc-flash boundaries onboard ships<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While ships rarely publish full NFPA-70E style arc studies, Class and inspectors expect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>restricted approach boundaries<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>controlled access during racking or testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PPE proportional to risk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical high-risk activities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>breaker racking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>insulation testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>busbar inspection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>live voltage measurement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PPE: last line, not permission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>PPE does not make live work safe.<br>It only increases survival probability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical arc-flash PPE onboard may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>arc-rated coveralls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>face shields \/ balaclavas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>insulated gloves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>dielectric footwear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If PPE is required, <strong>ask why the system is live<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd3b Real-World Case: Arc-Flash Injury During Breaker Racking (Offshore Vessel)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An electrician was seriously burned while racking a withdrawable breaker in a live 440 V switchboard.
