They fail because <strong>power quality degrades quietly<\/strong> until protection, control systems, and machines no longer behave predictably. Harmonics, voltage distortion, and frequency instability erode margins invisibly. By the time alarms appear, the system is already fragile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Power quality is not an abstract electrical concept. On ships, it directly affects <strong>motor heating, relay behaviour, UPS autonomy, inverter stability, and PMS decision-making<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What \u201cpower quality\u201d actually means onboard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Power quality describes how closely the electrical supply resembles an ideal sinusoidal waveform at stable voltage and frequency. On ships, this is constantly disturbed by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>rectifiers and inverters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>VFD-driven thrusters and pumps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UPS systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ESS charge\/discharge cycles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rapid load changes during manoeuvring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each device reshapes current. The generators must absorb the consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Harmonics \u2014 distortion that turns current into heat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Harmonics are currents at multiples of the fundamental frequency. They do not contribute to useful work. They only reduce symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Professional ETO mindset<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A competent ETO does not ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cIs the load within kW?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>What is the THD at this bus?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Which loads inject distortion?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What heats first \u2014 generator, transformer, or motor?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What protection is blind to harmonics?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Distorted power ages equipment quietly \u2014 until multiple systems fail together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Knowledge to Carry Forward<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Power quality failures are slow, cumulative, and systemic.
