(U.S. Navy photo)<\/p>\n<p>US-Sanctioned Supertankers Enter Gulf Despite Blockade<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE, April 16 (Reuters)\u00a0\u2013\u00a0A second U.S.-sanctioned supertanker has entered the Gulf via the Strait of Hormuz,\u00a0shipping\u00a0data showed, despite a U.S. blockade on vessels\u00a0visiting\u00a0Iranian ports.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump announced the blockade on Sunday after weekend peace talks in Islamabad between the U.S. and Iran<\/p>\n<p>failed to reach a deal<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Central Command said on X that 10 vessels have been turned around and no\u00a0ships have broken through since the start of the blockade on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s Fars News Agency said<\/p>\n<p>on Wednesday that an Iranian supertanker subject to U.S. sanctions crossed the strait towards Iran\u2019s Imam Khomeini port despite the blockade. Fars did not identify the tanker or give further details of its voyage.<\/p>\n<p>The empty Very Large Crude Carrier\u00a0(VLCC)<\/p>\n<p>entered the Gulf on Wednesday, data from LSEG and Kpler showed. It was not immediately clear where the VLCC, which is capable of carrying 2 million barrels of oil, is heading.<\/p>\n<p>The tanker\u2019s entry into the Gulf comes a day after U.S.-sanctioned VLCC<\/p>\n<p>passed through the Strait of Hormuz. The<\/p>\n<p>is heading to Iraq, Kpler data showed.<\/p>\n<p>Both tankers have records of carrying Iranian oil in the past few years, according to Kpler data.<\/p>\n<p>Vessels that have been forced to turn back include the<\/p>\n<p>U.S.-sanctioned tanker Rich Starry<\/p>\n<p>, which returned to the Gulf on Wednesday, a day after exiting.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. has warned it<\/p>\n<p>could add secondary sanctions<\/p>\n<p>on buyers of Iranian oil in an apparent effort to gain leverage ahead of more negotiations, just weeks after Washington loosened the enforcement of some Iran energy sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>Iran could consider allowing ships<\/p>\n<p>to sail freely through the Omani side of the Strait of Hormuz without risk of attack as part of proposals it has offered in negotiations with the\u00a0U.S., providing a deal is clinched to prevent renewed conflict, a source briefed by Tehran said.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. blockade is expected to reduce Iran\u2019s crude exports, although the OPEC producer could sustain its current production at 3.5 million barrels per day\u00a0(bpd)\u00a0for weeks by storing oil in onshore tanks, analysts say.<\/p>\n<p>Iran exported 1.84 million bpd of crude in March and has shipped 1.71 million bpd thus far in April, compared with an average of 1.68 million bpd in 2025, according to Kpler data.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/tmsnrt.rs\/4mugW0o<\/p>\n<div class=\"mh-source-attribution\">\n  <span>Source:<\/span><br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/us-sanctioned-supertankers-enter-gulf-despite-blockade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">gcaptain<\/a>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arleigh\u00a0Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Frank E.
