
Boston Harbor’s MV Outward Certain has returned to Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Company for a mid-life refit. Redelivery is deliberate for spring 2026.
Objective-designed by JW Gilbert Associates and constructed by the Somerset, Mass., shipyard in 1995, the 64-foot, 140-passenger metal vessel carries guests and provides seasonally to Cathleen Stone Island Outward Certain, which provides experiential out of doors packages for youth and adults on the island in Boston Harbor.
Together with putting in a brand new shaft and propeller, the yard will substitute the unique 315hp Detroit Diesel 8V92 engine and modify the engine mattress to accommodate a brand new 429hp, EPA Tier 3, Mitsubishi S6B3-MPTAW-3 diesel engine, which can ship a prime velocity of 11 knots. The brand new engine is related to a Twin Disc MG-5114, 3:1 gearbox. The yard will substitute the vessel’s exhaust, cooling and air flow techniques to accommodate the brand new engine. The unique Wagner steering system shall be changed with a brand new Dometic Seastar Optimus system.
Six electrical heaters will substitute the unique diesel-fired boiler and heaters to provide adequate warmth for seasonal operation. Many updates shall be made to {the electrical} and piping techniques, together with new LED lighting, bilge piping, and home techniques. The engine room shall be geared up with a brand new FireBoy GA Sequence hearth suppression system.
The vessel’s hull shall be totally sandblasted, surveyed, and replated as required. Doorways, home windows, and hatches shall be inspected, examined, and repaired as wanted. The vessel’s exterior and inside will obtain a brand new coating system.
