Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV), a world chief in testing, inspection, and certification, is collaborating with shipowner Selar, designer Cormoran/Ship-ST and shipyard CNOI on the certification of Captain Arctic, Selar’s pioneering polar expedition cruise designed to function with near zero carbon emissions.
Below development by CNOI, the vessel is the primary of its form in polar exploration, constructed for full sustainability with main propulsion from wind and photo voltaic power. Measuring 230 ft, it options 5 inflexible sails designed by Cormoran/Ship-ST, built-in with 20,000 sq. ft of photo voltaic panels. This design permits silent, emission-free cruising, lowering CO₂ output by 90% in comparison with typical vessels.
Its inflexible sail system underwent a complete evaluation by Bureau Veritas, verifying its compliance with BV’s guidelines for security and efficiency, together with BV NR206 for Wind Propulsion System. The inflexible sail and photo voltaic wings have been granted Approval in Precept (AiP) from Bureau Veritas in 2023.
