Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) is happy to announce its participation in NavHyS, a brand new European analysis challenge devoted to advancing the usage of liquid hydrogen (LH₂) in maritime purposes. Funded by the Clear Hydrogen Partnership, NavHyS brings collectively a consortium of 14 companions from throughout Europe, with the shared objective of decarbonizing the transport trade.

Working carefully with ArianeGroup, BV has performed a key position in growing the challenge proposal and consortium construction and contributed its experience in security, rule improvement, and classification to assist innovation in hydrogen-fuelled vessels. Particularly, NavHyS focuses on one of the crucial technically formidable facets of hydrogen deployment at sea: the usage of below-deck Kind C LH₂ tanks as marine gas for service operation vessels (SOVs).

As a part of this effort, BV will ship three Approvals in Precept (AiPs) by its Design Evaluation actions, protecting the liquid hydrogen storage system, gas system, and their integration into an SOV. Along with classification and AiPs, BV will additional lead security analysis and rule improvement particular to liquid hydrogen in maritime environments. The challenge may also look at shore-based hydrogen provide options and the lifecycle of hydrogen-fuelled vessels.

NavHyS formally launched in January 2025, and can run for 36 months, with an EU contribution of €5 million. The challenge is anticipated to achieve Know-how Readiness Stage (TRL) 8-9 by 2030, enabling scalable, real-world deployment by 2035-2040.

By combining maritime design with the area sector’s expertise in cryogenic storage, NavHyS goals to ship a breakthrough idea for SOVs supporting offshore wind farms. The design envisions storage tanks of 200-300 m³, able to carrying 12-18 tonnes of liquid hydrogen, bunkered at 10 tonH2/hour, and offering as much as 10 days of autonomous operation.

NavHyS is coordinated by ArianeGroup, bringing collectively main organizations and LH₂ consultants together with ENGIE, Gasoline and Warmth, INERIS, RISE (Swedish Analysis Institute), and Vard.
