Lessons Learned: Container Explosion While Underway

Transport Malta MSIU issued an investigation report on the cargo explosion onboard a container ship whereas underway in February 2020. The investigation established that flammable vapours had collected contained in the container, which contained scrap steel and used automobile components, leading to an explosive ambiance.

The Incident

While Singapore, underway in direction of an explosion occurred in cargo maintain no. 7 of the container ship. A fireplace social gathering was instantly mustered by the grasp to evaluate the state of affairs contained in the cargo maintain.

Security actions taken

Throughout the security investigation, the Firm contacted the charterers to inquire on the steps that will be taken to stop reoccurrence of such accidents. By the use of a round, the Charterers drew the eye of their shippers to their cargo insurance policies, which addressed measures to be adopted when classifying used auto components commodities/elements. Moreover, it raised consciousness on the significance of constructing an accurate declaration for used auto components, making particular reference to the accident involving Croatia.

In view of the protection actions taken by the Firm and their charterers, no security suggestions have been made.
