The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) efficiently averted a possible catastrophe after a fireplace broke out on a containership berthed at Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) on the Port of Colombo.
The incident occurred whereas MSC CAPETOWN III was discharging 995 packing containers and loading 880 packing containers.
The vessel, a part of the East Africa Service, arrived at JCT from Singapore on August 11, 2024. It was additionally carrying 596 by cargo containers (out-port containers). The SLPA stories that the fireplace began within the 41/43 hatch space, affecting round 100 under-deck containers and 60 on-deck containers, and escalated into an explosion.
“The vessel berthed at our terminal confirmed no prior indicators of fireplace. Investigations into the reason for the fireplace and the standing of the cargo are ongoing.
