The next is the Navy Medium Touchdown Ship (LSM) (Beforehand Mild Amphibious Warship [LAW]) Program: Background and Points for Congress on July 23, 2024.
From the report
Overview
As mentioned above, the LSM program is to incorporate 18 to 35 ships. LSMs can be a lot smaller and individually a lot cheaper to acquire and function than the Navy’s present amphibious ships.
Procurement Schedule
The Navy desires to acquire the primary LSM in FY2025, the second in FY2026, the third and fourth in FY2027, the fifth and sixth LSMs in FY2028, the seventh and eighth in FY2029, and a minimum of 10 extra in fiscal years past FY2029. On Could 17, 2023, the Navy launched a Request for Data (RFI) relating to the LSM program asking companies to answer to the next questions, amongst others:
Do you have got the sources and manufacturing capability accessible to be awarded 4 (4) [LSM] ships per fiscal 12 months?… If that’s the case, how can your shipyard assist manufacturing of 4 [LSM] hulls per 12 months?… If not, what’s the most variety of [LSM] ships that may start manufacturing every year?… If not, are there funding or shipyard enhancements that may be carried out to allow rising manufacturing capability to 4 [LSM] hulls per 12 months?
The Navy’s FY2025 price range submission states that the contract for the development of the primary LSM can be awarded in March 2025, and that the ship can be delivered in February 2029.
Procurement Value
Beneath the Navy’s FY2025 price range submission, the primary LSM can be procured in FY2025 at a value of $268.1 million, the second LSM can be procured in FY2026 at a value of $200.0 million, the third and fourth LSMs can be procured in FY2027 at a mixed value of $349.5 million (i.e., a median value of about $174.7 million every), the fifth and sixth LSMs can be procured in FY2028 at a mixed value of $305.1 million (i.e., a median of about $152.5 million every), and the seventh and eighth LSMs can be procured in FY2029 at a mixed value of $311.5 million (i.e., a median of about $155.7 million every). The primary LSM would value greater than subsequent ships in this system as a result of the procurement value of the primary LSM would come with a lot or the entire detailed design/nonrecurring engineering (DD/NRE) prices for the category. (It’s a conventional Navy budgeting apply to incorporate a lot of the entire DD/NRE prices for a category of ship within the procurement value of the lead ship within the class.) By the use of comparability, the Navy’s most not too long ago procured LHA-type amphibious ship has an estimated unit procurement value within the Navy’s FY2025 price range submission of about $3.8 billion, and LPD-17 Flight II amphibious ships have unit procurement prices of about $2.0 billion.
