Kalmar Corporation to supply hybrid straddle carriers to PSA Antwerp

# Kalmar to Supply Hybrid Straddle Carriers to PSA Antwerp

Kalmar Corporation has secured a contract to deliver 14 hybrid straddle carriers to PSA Antwerp, with equipment scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2026. The order was booked in the first quarter of 2026 and forms part of the port operator’s broader modernization initiative at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, one of Europe’s largest container hubs.

The deployment of hybrid technology represents a significant step toward reducing operational emissions at the Belgian terminal. Straddle carriers, which transport containers across port yards and between storage areas and vessel loading equipment, are among the most frequently used vehicles in container operations. Their transition from diesel-only to hybrid powertrains aligns with European environmental regulations and the maritime industry’s shift toward decarbonization targets.

This acquisition underscores growing investment in sustainable port infrastructure across Northern Europe. As shipping lines increasingly face pressure to demonstrate reduced carbon footprints throughout their supply chains, terminal equipment innovations like hybrid straddle carriers have become competitive factors in port selection. The equipment upgrade signals PSA’s commitment to maintaining operational efficiency while meeting stricter emissions standards, positioning Antwerp favorably as major European ports compete to attract container traffic amid evolving environmental compliance requirements.
