China’s achievements in port electrification and the green transformation of shipping have played a positive role in advancing the global maritime sector’s decarbonization, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Arsenio Dominguez has said.
Dominguez said this in a recent interview with Xinhua ahead of the 84th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 84), scheduled for April 27 to May 1 at the IMO headquarters in London.
He emphasized that China’s active participation in IMO affairs is reflected in its contributions across multiple areas, including port operations, seafarer training and education, ship design and construction, and the implementation of IMO instruments.

Coconut oil is not immediately associated with risk, but its carriage can release toxic vapours and cause oxygen depletion in enclosed spaces. Manish Nayyar, Senior Loss Prevention Executive, NorthStandard, explains why crew working inside cargo tanks must be fully informed
Transporting coconut oil and its derivatives, viz. Crude Coconut Oil (CCNO), Coconut Oil Fatty Acid Distillate (CFAD) and Refined Coconut Oil, by sea comes with a critical but underestimated risk: the generation of toxic gas inside the vessel’s cargo tanks.
Contrary to common belief, vegetable oils, and particularly crude coconut oil (CCNO), pose substantial atmospheric hazards in enclosed spaces.

Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) has recorded its highest-ever single-vessel performance, handling 10,407 container moves, equivalent to 15,113 TEUs, during the recent call of MSC INGY, marking a new operational milestone for the terminal.
The vessel, operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), represents one of the larger container ships calling at Colombo, reflecting the terminal’s growing capability to efficiently handle ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) and rising cargo volumes.
During the call, the terminal achieved a gross vessel rate exceeding 200 moves per hour and a gross crane rate of over 30 moves per crane per hour, emphasising the speed, coordination, and operational discipline behind the record performance.
CICT officials said the achievement highlights the terminal’s continued focus on operational efficiency, vessel turnaround performance, and capacity optimisation within

LNG bunker prices in Rotterdam and Singapore have rallied, driven by tightening global gas supply and escalating risks around the Strait of Hormuz.
Weekly changes in LNG bunker prices:
Rotterdam up by $63/mt to $957/mt
Singapore up by $86/mt at $1,066/mt

Rotterdam’s LNG bunker price has climbed by $63/mt, tracking gains in the front-month Dutch TTF natural gas contract. Over the past week, the benchmark has risen by $1.37/MMBtu to $15.48/MMBtu ($805/mt).
The surge in TTF prices has been largely driven by tightening supply dynamics, with “continued supply restrictions due to intermittent planned and unplanned shutdowns at several gas production facilities in Norway, as well as growing expectations of a continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz,” according to the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC).

The extended closure of the Strait of Hormuz and extreme weather have pushed farm commodity prices to a two-year high, as fertilizer challenges and the prospect of smaller harvests drive food inflation risks.
The Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index, which tracks 10 of the world’s top-selling crop products, has climbed for a third straight month to the highest since November 2023. This marks a shift from before the Middle East war, when most crop prices were weighed down by abundant inventory and bumper harvests.
Farmers from Asia to Australia to the US are facing converging challenges posed by the Iran war and drought, impacting prices of staple food products from bread to pasta and cooking oil.
Wheat and corn, both fertilizer-intensive crops, are among the most affected. Benchmark wheat futures on the Chicago Board of Trade have surged about 12% since the war erupted in late February, and hit the highe
