Japan has a rich shipbuilding history. An island nation that relies on maritime trade, it built an impressive merchant fleet and created an environment in which shipbuilding could thrive.
From the government prioritizing the industry in the 1860s to helping to birth modern shipbuilding methods in the 1950s, the country has long pursued innovation and manufacturing excellence in this area.
Shipbuilding speed and efficiency grew significantly as new mass production techniques were refined and processes continuously improved. But in the late 20th century, state-supported competition from nations including China and South Korea grew and Japan’s share of the global industry declined.
Now the country is making a strategic move to regain shipbuilding momentum — with collaboration and digital innovation at the heart of the push.

Scorpio Tankers Inc. announced that it has entered into agreements to sell six vessels comprising three 2014 built LR2 product tankers, STI Park, STI Sloane and STI Madison, for $195 million in aggregate, and three 2014 built MR product tankers, STI Aqua, STI Regina and STI Opera, for $105 million in aggregate. The sale of these vessels is expected to close within the second quarter of 2026.
There is no debt outstanding with respect to STI Park and STI Sloane and there is $10.7 million of debt outstanding on the 2023 $225.0 Million Revolving Credit Facility with respect to STI Madison.
STI Aqua, STI Regina and STI Opera had an aggregate outstanding debt balance of $21.3 million on the 2023 $225.0 Million Revolving Credit Facility, which was repaid in April 2026.

Mitsui O.S.K. announced MOL and Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (J-Power; Representative Director President: Hideaki Kato; Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) have installed the Wind Challenger-a hard-sail wind propulsion system (Note 1)-on the Kurotakisan Maru Ⅲ (Note 2), a coal carrier supplying J Power operations.

Rotterdam’s B100 discount to VLSFO has narrowed by $87/mt, while its discount to LSMGO has dropped by a sharper $197/mt over the past week.
LNG discounts to LSMGO in Rotterdam have also narrowed by $68-72/mt to $399-595/mt.
At the same time, LNG premiums over liquefied biomethane (LBM) sold at 0 gCO2e in Rotterdam have eased by $30/mt to $364-370/mt, depending on engine type and methane slip.
Singapore B100’s discount to LSMGO has narrowed for another week, falling by $302/mt to $241/mt for EU-bound voyages.
For dual-fuel vessels bunkering in Singapore and sailing to the EU, B100 premiums over LNG have widened by $132-134/mt, depending on engine type.

The UP World LNG Shipping Index lost 6.33 points (2.79%) last week, closing at 220.61 points, while the S&P 500 gained 4.54% — its best week in a year — on ceasefire optimism and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. The divergence is telling: good news for equities broadly is not necessarily good news for LNG shipping. The UPI has concluded its first growth phase of the year, with gainers outnumbering decliners 7:13 and a median change of -1.46%.

BEIJING, April 21 (Reuters) – China on Tuesday implied energy assistance for the Philippines could be tied to Manila holding military drills with the U.S. and other allies, as its top newspaper showed Beijing’s readiness to leverage its reserves in diplomatic disputes.
In an editorial headlined “The Philippines should create conditions for deepening cooperation,” the ruling Communist Party’s official People’s Daily accused the Philippines of hypocrisy for seeking the emergency supplies days before hosting

’s oil trading firm sued for about $1 billion in over allegations that the shipping tycoon’s failed “vindictive” lawsuit brought them to the “brink of financial ruin.”
Alta Trading UK Ltd’s former chief executive officer Peter Bosworth and ex-chief financial officer Colin Hurley sued after Fredriksen’s firm lost a decade-long court case accusing them of a major fraud. A “dishonestly” obtained freezing order in 2015 stymied the duo’s attempt to start a new oil trading venture or find another job, their lawyers alleged at the start of a London trial.
