DNV awards AiP to HD HHI for innovative LNGC and VLEC designs with forward accommodation and WAPS

# DNV Approves HD HHI’s Next-Generation LNG and Ethane Carrier Designs

DNV has granted an Approval in Principle to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for innovative designs of liquefied natural gas carriers and very large ethane carriers featuring forward accommodation blocks and wind-assisted propulsion systems. The approval was announced at Gastech 2025, a leading international conference for the gas industry.

The designs represent a significant shift in conventional carrier architecture. Forward accommodation—positioning crew quarters at the bow rather than the traditional aft location—offers operational flexibility and reduces the vessel’s structural footprint. Combined with wind-assisted propulsion technology, these vessels are engineered to lower fuel consumption and emissions during ocean transits, addressing the maritime industry’s intensifying regulatory and commercial pressure to decarbonize.

These approvals underscore the sector’s pivot toward sustainability at a critical juncture. As environmental regulations tighten and shipowners face mounting pressure to reduce their carbon footprint, design innovations that deliver measurable efficiency gains gain competitive traction. HD HHI’s approval positions the South Korean shipbuilder to capture orders from energy companies seeking cleaner carrier solutions. The endorsement from a major classification society like DNV validates the technical feasibility of these approaches, likely encouraging other yards to pursue similar integrated designs and prompting owners to incorporate such vessels into their fleet renewal strategies.
