# ILA Conducts Leadership Training for Newly Elected Local Officers

The International Longshoremen’s Association held a “Leadership Foundation: A Lunch & Learn” session at its South Atlantic facility, bringing together newly elected local officers for guidance on their roles and responsibilities. Three ILA attorneys—Lesley Mardon, John P. Sheridan, and Eric Nelson—led the discussions, addressing the legal and operational duties that accompany union leadership positions. Attendees received copies of the “Local Union Officer Manual,” a comprehensive resource prepared by the ILA General Counsel Office to serve as a reference guide for governance and administrative matters.

The training underscores the ILA’s commitment to ensuring incoming leaders understand the complexities of representing port workers across the U.S. maritime labor landscape. Port operations depend heavily on stable labor relations and clear communication between union leadership and membership, making officer competency essential to maintaining smooth cargo handling operations and labor peace at major terminals.

Such educational initiatives are particularly significant given the ILA’s prominent role in labor negotiations affecting container shipping, breakbulk operations, and general cargo handling. Well-informed local officers strengthen union governance, reduce workplace disputes, and help maintain the operational consistency that port operators and shipping lines depend upon for supply chain reliability.
