India Inducts Third SSBN, Fourth Nilgiri-class Frigate

# India Inducts Third SSBN, Fourth Nilgiri-class Frigate

India’s naval modernization accelerated on April 3 with the simultaneous commissioning of two major warships at Visakhapatnam: INS Aridhaman, the country’s third Arihant-class ballistic missile submarine, and INS Taragiri, the fourth Nilgiri-class frigate. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh officiated the inductions, underscoring New Delhi’s strategic emphasis on indigenous naval capability development.

The dual commissioning reflects India’s broader objective to strengthen its submarine and surface combat capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region. The Arihant-class SSBNs form the backbone of India’s nuclear deterrent triad, while the Nilgiri-class represents the country’s latest generation frigate platform, equipped with advanced sensors and weapons systems. These inductions demonstrate India’s progress in long-term shipbuilding programs despite historical delays in naval procurement cycles.

The additions enhance India’s operational posture amid increasing maritime competition and regional security dynamics. With three operational SSBNs and four Nilgiri-class frigates now in service, the Indian Navy expands its sustained deployment capabilities across extended areas of operation. These platforms enable India to maintain credible deterrence and safeguard critical sea lanes, particularly as global supply chain vulnerabilities and geopolitical tensions create renewed focus on naval presence and power projection in Asian waters. Future commissioning schedules for additional Nilgiri-class vessels remain significant for maritime security observers.
