Port of Crotone advances multipurpose maritime centre

The Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Sea Port System Authority has announced the commencement of the Conference of Services for the technical and economic feasibility study governing the construction of a multipurpose centre to serve as both a maritime passenger station and the administrative headquarters of the port authority at the Port of Crotone.
The project follows the demolition of ruins at the former Sensi area and associated environmental remediation works, and represents a key element of a broader programme to transform the Port of Crotone by significantly expanding its functions, services and integration with the surrounding urban fabric.
Architecturally, the building is conceived as a single volume with two distinct facades, one oriented toward the city and marina with a representative function, and the other open to the sea and an outdoor events arena.
A lightweight canopy structure will define the open public spaces, providing shade and lighting while ensuring flexibility and visual identity.
The slightly sloping roof will incorporate photovoltaic panels to support the project’s energy efficiency objectives.
The design is grounded in principles of environmental sustainability, seismic safety, high maintainability and durability of materials.
Port Authority President Paolo Piacenza described the project as a strategic intervention that not only redevelops port spaces but strengthens the dialogue between the port and the community, with particular emphasis on cruise sector development.
He noted that 43 cruise ship calls are expected at Crotone in 2026, signalling growing momentum in the port’s tourism profile.
Mayor Voce framed the Conference of Services as a decisive moment for the regeneration of a strategic waterfront area, reinforcing Crotone’s identity as a modern, open and tourism-oriented coastal city.
