Royal Navy Floats Off 6,300-Ton Frigate HMS Active, Powered By 32,000kW Engines

# HMS Active Floated Off at Rosyth

The Royal Navy has successfully completed the float-off of HMS Active, the second Type 31 frigate, at the Rosyth shipyard in Scotland. The vessel, which displaces more than 6,300 tonnes and is powered by 32,000kW engines, marks a significant milestone in the Royal Navy’s frigate modernisation programme. The operation was conducted with support from engineers at Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), the UK Ministry of Defence’s procurement and support organisation.

The Type 31 represents a new class of general-purpose frigates designed to provide enhanced capabilities for the Royal Navy’s growing operational commitments. As the second vessel in the class following HMS Hiddensee, HMS Active’s successful float-off demonstrates progress in the UK’s naval shipbuilding programme and validates the design and construction methodology developed for this frigate class. The Type 31’s specifications—including its substantial displacement and powerful propulsion system—position it as a capable multi-role platform suitable for anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine operations, and maritime security missions.

The completion of HMS Active’s float-off brings the Royal Navy closer to expanding its surface fleet capacity. Several additional Type 31 frigates are in various stages of construction, with the programme expected to deliver multiple vessels over the coming years. This development underscores the UK’s commitment to maintaining advanced naval capabilities and securing its maritime interests in an increasingly complex global security environment.
